Very recently, Warner Bros. and DC Comics declared that Jon Kent, son of the original Superman, will be identified as bisexual for the first time in the issue of the upcoming comic Superman: Son of Kal-El # 5, which will be available on November 9.

Who doesn’t like Superman and his adventures fighting evil and the bad? As a kid, I enjoyed reading Superman comics as much as my father and my grandfather did in their younger days.

Just like his father, Clark Kent fell in love with a reporter, Lois Lane, his son has now fallen for a male reporter, Jay Nakamura.

The two initially become friends and then get romantically involved in the upcoming comic book pages. Following a scene where Superman burns out mentally and physically from trying to save as many people as he can, Jay is there to show his care and love for our superhero. Writer Tom Taylor and artist John Timms have only praise for each other and say they are excited about the idea of showing our favorite superhero in a new light.

“I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea,” said writer Tom Taylor. “Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth, and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”

With his romantic involvement with Jay, we can expect to see a softer side of Jon Kent in Son of Kal-El # 5. Showers of positive reactions and comments from advocates of the LGBTQ community, including me, are pouring in from around the globe for this bold decision taken by Warner Bros. and DC Comics.

How long will it be before we see a movie featuring Superman as bisexual? Not for long, I hope. I speculate this one’s a trial run for the silver screen. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hopes high until then.
